When you’re heading out onto the trail, leave those cotton T-shirts at home. Cotton doesn’t breathe and it holds onto moisture. That means when you take off your pack at the end of the day, your sweaty shirt won’t be dry for hours. Keith Hillman, owner of Out-N-Back in Orem, says there are a lot of great synthetic fabrics on the market that work well for both day hikes and backpacking trips.

Nylon shirts, shorts, pants and even skirts are available and the benefits are two-fold, according to Hillman.

First, they are lightweight. When gearing up for a backpacking trip, clothes will eat up much less weight.

Second, they breathe well and dry almost instantly. So whether from sweat or swimming, you won’t be in wet clothes for hours.

There are a variety of styles to choose from: shorts, pants, capris and skirts. Pants can also come with zippers that zip off into shorts.

There are also long-sleeved shirts available, which have venting to keep cool, but provide protection from the sun.

Last, but certainly not least, Hillman says to make sure you are wearing a hat. That will help keep you cool and protect you from the sun.

Hats with a full brim are best for protection, and many come fully crushable, so you can wad it up and stuff it inside your pack.

Wearing the right clothing will help make your trip more enjoyable. For more questions or information, visit Out-N-Back at 1797 S. State St. in Orem or call 224-0454.
