Keith's Pet Peeve: Insect repellent PDF Print E-mail

There is a lot of talk about insect repellent, protecting from West Nile Virus with 100 percent DEET. Keith Hillman of Out-N-Back is concerned when his customers come in wanting “the meanest, baddest insect repellent on the market.”

“My personal opinion on this is we don’t need the biggest, baddest thing on the market for Utah,” Hillman said.

The main reason for this is 100 percent DEET is a lot of DEET absorbing into your body in a short amount of time. That may be fine for adults, but for Scouts and small children, that could be a problem.

A couple of simple steps will help protect against bugs without all the chemicals.

First, start with sunscreen or moisturizing lotion as a base layer, then apply the insect repellent. This will slow down the absorption of the DEET into your skin.

There are also product that have a controled-release mechanism that will time release 30 percent DEET over a period of time. A second product is permethrin, which is applied to clothing before you put it on. It will last three weeks or up to six washings.

Hillman does say that DEET is the best product to use — keeping the bugs away is important and DEET works — these tips will help in being wise in its application.

Hillman and his staff are happy to answer any other questions, so contact them at 224-0454 or visit them at 1797 S. State St. in Orem.
