Looking to put a little "spring" into an otherwise never-ending winter? I've got the perfect solution: Jump On It.
And I mean literally.
After weeks of hearing, "Mom, can we PLEASE go to Jump On It?" I finally gave in. I had driven by the location a hundred times on the freeway, as probably everyone has, and had no idea what to expect. What I found was something that most every kid has only imagined while growing up.
"This is the ultimate dream for everybody," says Carl Alger, Jump Master and owner of Jump On It. "I grew up with a trampoline and we always wanted another trampoline to jump on, too. You know, to put right next to each other. You always tell your buddy down the street, 'Dude, tell your mom and dad, let's bring your trampoline down' and of course you never did, but that is what you always wanted to do."
So here it is, every kid's ultimate dream come true. I have to admit, it was fairly impressive. There are literally trampolines from wall-to-wall, and even up the sides of the walls!
We got there about 15 minutes after it opened, and there were already a good number of jumpers. By the time we left just over an hour later, there was a line of people waiting at the front desk. Even with the crowd, with a boastful 10,000 square feet of trampoline, there was no shortage of jumping room.
The trampoline area is divided up into two sections, one of which is just for kids 4 feet tall and under, alleviating the initial fear of moms with younger kids.
Janelle Low of Cedar Hills brought her three children, ages 11, 6 and 3.
"I like how it's separated," she said, "because I didn't want the little ones to be overwhelmed by the big kids."
There is no fear of that here. Along with the enclosed trampoline area, there is also a wall of giant inflatables reserved just for your under-4-footers.
Bringing along a toddler or two? Don't worry, they're taken care of as well. They also have their own little play area, complete with a full array of age-appropriate toys to keep them entertained.
And what about your older kids? We saw a game of catch with Nerf footballs taking place, along with a guy using what is called a bounce-board. It looked like a snowboard attached to his feet and he was using it to jump on. There were quite a few teenagers trying their hand at trampoline acrobatics and taking advantage of the wall trampolines. There are basketball hoops high on the walls — and I mean really high, not your typical 10-foot-high standard — and also, I have to say, a little to my disappointment, an area of video games. I guess for some, though, that is good news.
Heather Cassity of Traverse Mountain brought her three boys — Tommy, 11, Hunter, 9, and Wyatt, 6 — and was happy they all got a little bit of exercise.
"They love it," she said. "They were begging me, except for the older one, the 11-year-old. He's like, 'Uh, nope.' He's over there in the games now. I made him jump for as long as I could get him to jump, and then he's like, 'Can I have a quarter so I can go play games?' I figure if he gets a little bit of exercise, then he gets a little bit of a reward."
Sounds good to me.
The busiest day is Saturday and the days when school is out, like the day we went. They usually open earlier on those holidays, instead of the normal 2 p.m. Monday is family night, so the whole family gets in for only $20. On Thursday mornings, there is a "Mommy and Me" class as well as "Jump Aerobics" for parents looking to get a little exercise with their young ones.
One thing I did notice was how cold it was. Even my youngest daughter commented on the temperature. The normally uncomfortable climate is necessary, according to Alger.
"We have to keep it cold in here or it gets too hot to jump," he said. "Once you've been jumping for just a few minutes, you're already warmed up. That's one thing I tell the parents who are here, just sitting and watching their kids, 'Go jump, it'll warm you up!' "
And it does, indeed.
Perhaps the hardest thing about Jump On It is trying to find your way there. It's clearly visible from I-15, located just off to the west of the southbound lanes, just south of the Pleasant Grove/Lindon exit. But actually getting there is a different story. Make sure to go to the company's Web site, www.jumponitparty.com, to get directions or you may find yourself taking a few extra U-turns trying to find it — like we did.
All in all, it is a great way to have fun with your kids and best of all, get some exercise. Especially during the cold winter weather, when you feel like your kids are driving you crazy all cooped up inside with, according to them, nothing to do. It really is a great workout, and they won't even know they are exercising! How perfect is that?
For those in the southern end of the county, there is also a place called Jumpin' Jacks located in Springville. It offers similar accommodations for those interested in getting out of the cold. It is located at 1575 S. 1950 West. The phone number is (801) 491-8559.
